Fun Facts about Alaska
The Alaska State Insect: The Four-Spot Skimmer Dragonfly lives around streams and ponds, but sometimes take long trips away from water. They are fast fliers with big eyes and keen eyesight.
Alaska was named after the Aleut word "Alyeska," which means "the great land." Another translation is the Aleut word "Alaxsxag," which means the object towards which the action of the sea is directed."
The Alaska State Bird: The Alaska State bird is the Willow Ptarmigan. The Willow Ptarmigan is a small grouse, a pheasant-like bird that lives in the willows on the open tundra. Mostly brown in the summer, they turn snowy white in the winter.
The Alaska State Flag: Alaska adopted the flag for official state use in 1959. The blue field represents the sky, the sea, and mountain lakes, as well as Alaska's wildflowers. Emblazoned on the flag are eight gold stars: seven from the constellation Ursa Major, or the Big Dipper. The eighth being the North Star, representing the northern most state. Alaska's flag was designed in 1926 by a 13-year-old Native American boy, Bennie Benson, from the village of Chignik. Bennie received a $1,000 scholarship and a watch for his winning entry in the flag design contest.
