Fun Facts about Arizona
The Arizona State Neckwear: Arizona is the only state with official state neckwear. The Bola Tie was created in Arizona in the 1940's, and in 1971 lawmakers made it the official state neckwear. The Bola Tie is a cord held in place by an ornamental clasp, usually with a stone in a metal setting.
The Arizona State Bird: The Arizona State bird is Coue's Cactus Wren since 1931. The cactus wren is a small brown-and-white spotted bird. It burrows into the flesh of the cacti, keeping it cool and safe from predators.
Arizona may be named from a Tohono O'odhan word "arizonac," which means "small spring." Or ti may have come from the Aztec word "arizuma," which means "silver bearing."
The Arizona State Flag: The Arizona State Flag was adopted in 1917. It features a 5-pointed copper-colored star representing the state's most valuable mineral. The lower half is a deep blue representing liberty. The top half features 13 alternating rays. These are the colors of Spain, which once ruled the region.
