Fun Facts about California

The California Gray Whale migrates up and down the California coast. They spend winters in warm waters off Baja California and the summers in Alaska's Bering Sea. There are no more Gray Whales in the Atlantic Ocean as they where hunted by the Americans and Europeans for their blubber.

The California State Bird: The California State bird is the California Valley Quail. The California Valley Quail is known for its distinctive head feathers.

California is named for a mythical paradise, Califa, from a Spanish romance written by Montalvo in1510. Explorer Juan Cabrillo and his men knew the story of gold and jewels. However, the Spanish actually found very little gold. California was first sighted by the Spanish in 1542, 307 years ahead of the California Gold Rush.

California Teacher Stores The California State Flag: The Historic Bear Flag was raised at Sonoma on June 14, 1846, by a group of American settlers in revolt against Mexican rule. The flag was designed by William Todd on a piece of new unbleached cotton. The star imitated the lone star of Texas. A grizzly bear represented the many bears seen in the state. The word, "California Republic" was placed beneath the star and bear. It was adopted by the 1911 State Legislature as the State Flag. [Source: California Blue Book.]
