Fun Facts about Delaware
The Delaware State Bug: The state bug is the Ladybug. Lawmakers adopted this colorful beetle as its state bug at the request of a second grade class in 1974. Ladybugs are also known as ladybird beetles. Ladybugs eat aphids, tiny insects that suck the juices from plant leaves.
The Delaware State Bird: The Delaware State bird is the Blue Hen Chicken. These birds were used to fight other birds during the Revolutionary War. Blue Hen Chickens slashed the other birds with their claws and usually won the fight because of their strength. The bravery of Delaware's soldier during the Revolution earned them the name "the blue hen's chickens."
Delaware got its name from the Delaware Bay and River that were named after Sir Thomas West (Lord de la Warr), who was Virginia's first governor. Samuel Argall, a sea captain from Virginia, named the bay in 1610 after he was swept off course in a storm and took refuge in the same body of water discovered by Henry Hudson a year earlier.
The Delaware State Flag: Adopted on July 24, 1913, the Delaware state flag has a background of colonial blue surrounding a diamond of buff color in which the coat of arms of the state is placed. Below the diamond are the words "December 7, 1787," indicating the day on which Delaware was the first state to ratify the United States constitution. Because of this action, Delaware became the first state in the Union, and is, therefore, accorded the first position in such national events as presidential inaugurations. According to members of the original commission established to design the flag, the shades of buff and colonial blue represent those of the uniform of General George Washington. Inside the diamond, the flag recognizes the importance of commerce {the ship} and agriculture {wheat, corn, the ox and the farmer} to the state. Tribute is also paid to the Revolutionary War Soldiers. The words in the banner read Liberty and Independence.
