Fun Facts about Hawai'i
The Hawai'i State Gem: Black coral isn't really a gem; it's a small marine animal! Coral animals live in colonies (large groups), and their stony outer skeletons collect over the years to form great coral reefs. It can take hundreds of years to build a large reef! Local divers discovered Hawai'i's black coral in 1958. Hawai'i adopted the black coral as its state gem on April 22, 1987.
Some say that Hawai'i was named was named in honor of the legendary Polynesian chief Hawai'i-loa, who discovered the islands. Others believe that the early Polynesian settlers named the islands for their distant South Pacific homeland, which was once called "Hawaiki."
The Hawai'i State Bird: The Hawai'i State bird is the Nene (pronounced "nay-nay"), which is also know as the Hawai'ian goose. It has adapted to living in the harsh lava country. It's webbed feet are shaped like claws. It was adopted in 1957 as the territorial bird and was re-adopted in 1988 as the official state bird.
The Hawai'i State Flag: Hawaii was once an independent kingdom. (1810 - 1893) The flag was designed at the request of King Kamehameha I. It has eight stripes of white, red and blue that represent the eight main islands. The flag of Great Britain is emblazoned in the upper left corner to honor Hawaii's friendship with the British. The combination of Britain's Union Jack and the stripes of the United States is said to have please both American and British merchant shippers.
