Fun Facts about IDAHO

The Idaho State Fossil: The Hagerman Horse. In 1928 a farmer named Elmer Cook was digging on the side of a bluff overlooking the Snake River near Hagerman when his shovel hit bones. The bones were sent to the Smithsonian Institute where people were amazed. Expeditions to the site collected an unbelievable number of fossils. Mostly from horse-, or zebra-like animals. Over 130 complete horse skeleton have been discovered. The fossil beds are 3.5 million years old. The Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument was established to protect the fossils which are between two lava layers.

The Idaho State Bird: The Idaho State bird is the Mountain Bluebird. These birds are very comfortable around people and are a common visitor at ranch houses. Mountain bluebirds usually live in pairs. They nest in small hollow trees, but as the number of trees decrease, the birds are finding it harder to find homes.

How Idaho was named: First suggested for the name for the Colorado territory in 1860, the name "Idaho" was given to a steamship that sailed the Columbia River. When gold was discovered on the Clearwater River in 1860, the diggings were called Idaho mines. Some believe that a member of Congress made up the word. In 1863, the territory was officially named Idaho.

IDAHO Teacher Stores The Idaho State Flag: Idaho's current state flag was adopted in 1907. It features the state seal in the center of a blue field. A silk flag, five feet six inches fly, and four feet four inches on pike, bordered with gilt fringe two and one-half inches in width, with state seal of Idaho twenty-one inches in diameter, in colors, in the center of a blue field. Below the seal, the words "State of Idaho" are embroidered in gold block letters on a red band.
