Fun Facts about ILLINOIS
The Illinois State Fossil is the Tully Monster. The Tully Monster was a soft-bodied marine animal that lived 280-340 million years ago. More than 100 Tully Monsters have been found in Illinois. The Tully Monster became the state fossil in 1989. The creature was less than a foot long and probably not very scary. The monster was sort of like a tube, and did not have a backbone!
The Illinois State Bird: The Illinois State bird is the Cardinal. These birds are known for their bright red feathers and cheerful song. The male's feathers are bright red, but the female's feathers are a yellowish-brown.
Illinois is named for the Algonquin word "Illini" which means "men" or "tribe of superior men." It is taken from the word "illiniwek," used to refer to people who lived in the area. The Illini people were made up of many tribes. They shared a similar language and customs. The french added "ois" and that's how we get Illinois.
The Illinois State Flag: The state Flag was adopted in 1915. The Illinois State Flag is a simple representation of the Great Seal of Illinois against a white background. In 1970, the General Assembly voted to add the word "ILLINOIS" under the Great Seal of the flag. The State's name was added to the flag to ensure that people not familiar with the Great Seal of Illinois would still recognize the banner.
