Fun Facts about MARYLAND

The Maryland State Reptile is the Diamondback Terrapin. They will live in only unpolluted saltwater marshes and rivers. When they are around, Marylanders know their wetlands are healthy. Settlers relied heavily on the Diamondback Terrapin for food. Native Americans taught them how to roast the turtles on hot coals. They were harvested almost to extinction. Laws were passed to protect them.

The Maryland State Bird: The Maryland State bird is the Baltimore Oriole, also known as the Northern Oriole.Another name for it is the Hang-nest because they build nests that look like a pouch hanging from a tree. Baltimore's professional baseball team is called the Baltimore Orioles.

How Maryland was named: When King Charles I issued a charter to Lord Baltimore, he requested the colony be named in honor of his beloved wife, Henrietta Maria. Lord Baltimore honored the request, naming the colony Maryland.

Maryland was founded as an English colony in 1634 by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore. The black and Gold designs belong to the Calvert family. The red and white design belongs to the Crossland family, the family of Lord Baltimore's mother.
