Fun Facts about MICHIGAN

The Michigan State Animal is NOT the Wolverine. Michigan's nickname may be the Wolverine State, but you are not like to see one in Michigan. Wolverines are NOT native to the state. They live in Canada and northern Minnesota. Someone just got the idea that they may have lived in Michigan, too.

The Michigan State Bird: The Michigan State bird is the American Robin. Robins are of the thrush family. Europeans gave the red-breasted bird its name after a smaller and brighter-chested bird of their homelands. They eat berries, insects, and worms.

Michigan got its name from the Ojibwa tribe, also know as the Chippewa. They called Michigan, "michigama," which means "great waters." This could be because 4 of the 5 Great Lakes touch Michigan's borders: Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Michigan.

MICHIGAN Teacher Stores The Michigan State Flag: Michigan's current state flag was adopted in 1911. On the blue shield the sun rises over a lake and peninsula, a man with raised hand and holding a gun represents peace and the ability to defend his rights. The elk and moose are symbols of Michigan, while the eagle represents the United States. The first state flag featured a portrait of the first governor, Stevens T. Mason.
