Fun Facts about MISSISSIPPI
The Mississippi State Stone is Petrified Wood. Petrified Wood that dates back 36 million years can be found in the Petrified Forest in Madison County. This is the only petrified forest east of the Rocky Mountains.
The Mississippi State Bird: The Mississippi State bird is the Mockingbird. It copies the songs of other birds. Mockingbirds can also copy other sounds like a dog barking.
Mississippi gets its name from Native Americans. The Ojibwa (Chippewa) tribe called the big river nearby "mici zibi," which means "gathering of all the waters." The Choctaws name for the river was "mish sha sippukrie," which means "father of waters," or "beyond age." "Messipi was what the Algonquins called it, which means, simply, "big river."
The Mississippi State Flag: The committee to design a State Flag was appointed by legislative action February 7, 1894, and provided that the flag reported by the committee should become the official flag. The Confederate flag is included in the top left corner to show that Mississippi belonged to the Confederacy during the Civil War. The remainder of the flag is in three bars in the national colors of red, white, and blue. The past few years have brought controversy over the Confederate flag and items that also feature that symbol.
