The North Carolina State Gem: The State Precious Stone for North Carolina is the Emerald. One stone of 1,438 carats (worth more than $100,000) was found at Hiddenite, near Statesville.

The North Carolina State Bird: The North Carolina State Bird is the Cardinal. The Cardinal is know for its bright plumage and cheerful song. Sometimes called the "winter redbird," the Cardinal is actually a year-round resident of North Carolina.

How North Carolina was named: England's King Charles I named the region south of Virginia "Carolana," meaning "Land of Charles." This is derived from the Latin name "Carolus." translated as "Charles." In 1663, Charles the second changed the spelling to "Carolina." The territory was later divided between North and South Carolina.

The North Carolina State Flag: The state flag of North Carolina was adopted in 1885. The May 20th, 1775 date marks the "Meckenburg Declaration of Independence" from England. The April 12th, 1776 date is when North Carolina's Continental Congress delegates were instructed to vote for independence.
