Fun Facts about NEW JERSEY

The New Jersey State Ship: New Jersey's official tall ship is "The A.J. Meerwald." The 1928 Delaware Bay oyster schooner was built in Dorchester, NJ and is now located in Bivalve, near Norris.

The New Jersey State Bird is the eastern goldfinch. It has yellow feathers with a black cap, tail, and wings. The bird likes to fly up and down like a roller coaster and sings a bright, clear song.

New Jersey is named for the Isle of Jersey in the English Channel. Sir George Carteret defended this island during the English Civil War. Lord John Berkley and Carteret were awarded the land between the Delaware Rive and Hudson Rivers. The land is called New Jersey in honor of Carteret's achievements.

NEW JERSEY Teacher Stores The New Jersey State Flag (above): The State flag of New Jersey is buff colored. The state coat of arms is emblazoned in the center. The shield has three plows with a horse's head above it. Two women represent the goddesses of Liberty and Agriculture. A ribbon at the bottom includes the year of independence in 1776 and reads: Liberty and Prosperity. The New Jersey state flag was formally adopted in 1896.
