A badly singed black bear cub was found clinging to a burned pine tree near the village of Capitan. The cub was nicknamed "hotfoot." However, he became the Nation Forest Service's anti-forest fire mascot and was renamed "Smokey." Smokey became so popular and received so much fan mail that he was given his own zip code!
