Fun Facts about OHIO

The Ohio State Fossil: The Trilobite lived millions of years ago. Today we know that Trilobites were marine animals that lived only under water. Scientists believe that they may be related to king crabs, scorpions and spiders.

The Ohio State Bird: The Ohio State Bird is the Northern Cardinal.. These birds are known for their bright red feathers and cheerful song. The male's feathers are bright red, but the female's feathers are a yellowish-brown.

Ohio was named for the Ohio River. The Ohio River got its name from the Iroquois tribe. They called the river "Oheo," which means "great river" or "something great."

The Ohio State Flag (above): Ohio's state flag was adopted in 1902. The Ohio burgee, as the swallowtail design is properly called, was designed by John Eisemann. The large blue triangle represents Ohio's hills and valleys, and the stripes represent roads and waterways. The 13 stars grouped about the circle represent the original states of the union; the 4 stars added to the peak of the triangle symbolize that Ohio was the 17th state admitted to the union. The white circle with its red center not only represents the "O" in Ohio, but also suggests Ohio's famous nickname, "The Buckeye State."
