Fun Facts about OKLAHOMA
The Oklahoma State Stone: Oklahoma is one of the few places where the rare crystal Barite Rose Rock can be found. These crystals were formed in prehistoric times during the Permian Age. The rocks are reddish-brown to cinnamon-colored because of the reddish soil. The Cherokees in Oklahoma believe that the red rock represents the blood of the braves and the tears of the maidens who were forced to leave their homelands during the Trail of Tears between 1831 and 1838. Many, many people died during the journey.
The Oklahoma State Bird: The Oklahoma State Bird is the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. This bird got its name from its black and white tail. The tail is about twice as long as the bird's body and is so deeply forked the it looks like - you guessed it! - a pair of scissors. Adults are about 14" long including their tails. To attract the attention of females, males often "skydances" to show off their tail feathers.
Oklahoma was named: Oklahoma's name comes from the combination of two Choctaw words - "okla," which means "people," and "hummus," which means "red." Oklahoma means "red people."
The Oklahoma State Flag: The Oklahoma state flag honors more than 60 groups of Native Americans and their ancestors. The blue field comes from a flag carried by Choctaw soldiers during the civil war. The center shield is the battle shield of an Osage warrior. It is made of buffalo hide and decorated with eagle feathers. Two symbols of peace lie across the shield. One is the calumet, or peace pipe. The other is an olive branch. Crosses on the shield are Native American signs for stars, representing high ideals.
