Fun Facts about PENNSYLVANIA

The Pennsylvania State Dog is the Great Dane. Pennsylvania's founding father, William Penn, owner a Great Dane. The dog appears in a portrait of Penn that hangs in the Governor's Reception Room in Harrisburg. I made perfect sense for this breed to be named the state dog.

The Pennsylvania State Bird: The Pennsylvania State Bird is the Ruffled Grouse. This bird goes by several other names, including the Partridge. In the Midwest they are called Prairie-Chickens. They became the official state bird on June 22, 1931.

Pennsylvania was named: Pennsylvania's name means "Penn's Woods." King Charles II of England named it in honor of William Penn's father, Admiral William Penn.

PENNSYLVANIA Teacher Stores The Pennsylvania State Flag: Pennsylvania's State Flag is more of a square than a rectangle. It is composed of a blue field on which the State Coat of Arms is embroidered. Draft horses are on either side of the coat of arms and the American eagle rests on the top. The scroll at the bottom reads Virtue, Liberty and Independence. The first state flag bearing the state coat of arms was authorized by the general assembly in 1799. An act of the general assembly of June 13, 1907, standardized the flag and required that the blue field match the blue of "Old Glory".
