Fun Facts about South Dakota

The South Dakota State Animal is the coyote. Coyotes are natural predators of small game birds and rodents. They hunt in the open fields and prairies of South Dakota, and are found mostly along the Missouri River and in the Black Hills. At one time South Dakota was nicknamed "The Coyote State!"

The South Dakota State Bird: The South Dakota State bird is Ring-necked Pheasant. On February 13, 1943, South Dakota chose a bird that is native to China as the state bird! Ring-necked pheasants were first brought to North America in the 1800's and have thrived ever since.

South Dakota was named for the Lakota band of the seven Sioux tribes. The Sioux nation is one of the largest tribes of Native Americans.
