Fun Facts about UTAH

The Utah State Fish is the Bonneville Cutthroat Trout. The cutthroat trout is a coldwater fish that is easy to spot - it has a reddish or orange marking on its throat, giving the impression of a cut throat. Utah's state fish is named for Lake Bonneville, which covered much of western Utah during the ice age. In fact, the Great Salt Lake is a remnant of that enormous prehistoric lake.

The Utah State Bird: The Utah State bird is the California Gull. It may seem strange for an inland state to have a "sea" gull as its state bird, but not all gulls live at the sea! When the Mormons settled Utah in 1847 and 1848, swarms of crickets appeared, devouring their crops. Luckily, flocks of California gulls swooped down and ate the insects. Utahns were so grateful that they made the California Sea Gull the official state bird on Valentine's Day 1955.

Utah was named for the Ute Native American tribe, who lived in the mountains. The name Ute means "people of the mountains." The territory was then called the Land of the Utes, or Utah.

UTAH Teacher Stores The Utah State Flag: On a blue field, appears the state seal. In the center of the seal is a beehive, the state emblem, with a sego lily growing on either side. The sego lily stands for peace. The state motto "Industry" means steady effort. A national flag shows that Utah supports the United States. The eagle stands for protection in peace and war. The date 1847 represents the year that Brigham Young led a group of people to the Salt Lake Valley to reestablish in Utah, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, also know as The Mormons. The date 1896 represents the year that Utah gained admission to the Union of the United States.
