Fun Facts about VERMONT

The Vermont State Fossil: In 1949, railroad workers uncovered an unusual find. They discovered bones unlike any they had ever seen before. The bones were later identified as those of a beluga or white whale. The skeleton is about 12,500 years old and was named for Charlotte for the town near which it was found. In 1993, Vermont adopted Charlotte as its state fossil.

The Vermont State Bird: The Vermont State bird is the Hermit Thrush. The hermit thrush is also known as the American Nightingale, probably because of its beautiful, bell-like song. The hermit thrush became Vermont's state bird on June 1, 1941.

How Vermont was named: The name "Vermont" originally comes from the French phrase "Les monts verts," or "the green mountains." French explorer Samuel de Champlain was the first European to see Vermont in 1609. He labeled the area "Vert Mont" on maps he drew. The name was later shortened to Vermont.
